My name is Sarah and I’m 19 years old and have a beautiful 2 year old daughter called Marissa, we have are own lovely home and were extremely happy together, but it didn’t always used to be like that for us.
It started when I left school at 12 with no GCSE’s or any prospects of what to do next, I spent four years just chilling with my friends drinking and smoking, had a few sales jobs but nothing I wanted to stick at.
Then I got with my baby’s dad and fell pregnant, my relationship deteriorated and so did my health, I lost my home and self respect. I quickly realised that I had to do something with my life for my and my daughter’s sake. I started making regular visits to Connexions to see the PIPS team, the Personal Adviser I saw helped me think about what I wanted to do and I enrolled on an introductory counselling course. When my daughter was one, I started doing a home based learning course. I was busy with other things at the same time, so I went at my own pace and worked on it over a year. Working through the modules really helped me. One of the modules taught me how to manage my money, and in one another one, I had to write a letter to myself and set goals. This helped me to know what I am now working towards. I have now been at university doing counselling for two and a half years and I’m doing really well, also now studying to do my maths and English GCSEs by doing online courses with learn-direct which I really enjoy. Also, I recently started a night course at South Leicestershire College studying a level 4-computing course. On the whole, I feel better about my life because I’m working towards building a better future for my daughter and me.
