I was 16 when my son William was born. When he was 2 months old, I started on a home based learning course for young parents. I thought it was quite easy.
I then went to do a course at Loughborough College for young parents. it showed me what options I had. I preferred this course because I could speak to and make friends with other young parents.
After that, I went onto a Positive Futures programme at the college. It was two days a week; one day was for motivation and skills building and the other was vocational. I chose 'Motor Vehicle' for the vocational part. For a fun session the programme leaders took the group to do abseiling and climbing. I am now 18 (my son is 2). I am working on a BTEC First in Motor Vehicle. I hope to finish my studies and either work in a garage or do some more engineering studies. I am not sure which yet but it will be one of these. In the future I would like to be in a secure well paid job so I can support my family as well as have some luxuries like a nice house and car. Maybe some more kids. If there was another young parent who was thinking of doing a course, I'd definitely say "do it". Doing a course makes you feel better in yourself and you know you can go somewhere with it and provide for your kid(s) later on. |
